The most debated word in the list. The Sutras themselves say only this about it:
By the establishment of continence energy is gained.
The original Sanskrit
brahmacaryapratiṣṭhāyāṃ vīryalābhaḥ
Continence, and the energy it conserves. In the classical setting this meant celibacy for the dedicated practitioner.
