Aparigraha
aparigrahaNon-grasping or non-possessiveness, the fifth yama. The class version: hold everything lightly.
The fifth restraint is refusing to accumulate, and its stated reward is the strangest in the list:
When he is fixed in non-receiving, he gets the memory of past life.
The original Sanskrit
aparigrahasthairye janmakathaṃtāsaṃbodhaḥ
Memory of past lives. Whatever you make of that claim, the logic underneath it is worth keeping: a mind not busy holding on can see much further into how it came to be what it is.
