Shaucha
śaucaCleanliness or purity, the first niyama: clean body, clean space, clean inputs.
The first observance is cleanliness, and the texts are blunter about it than the studio version:
Internal and external cleanliness being established, there arises disgust for one's own body, and non-intercourse with others.
The original Sanskrit
śaucāt svāṅgajugupsā parair asaṃsargaḥ
Disgust for one's own body is not a line you will hear in a modern class. The next sutra gives the friendlier half of the claim:
There also arises purification of the Sattva, cheerfulness of the mind, concentration, conquest of the organs, and fitness for the realisation of the Self.
The original Sanskrit
sattvaśuddhisaumanasyaikāgryendriyajayātmadarśanayogyatvāni ca
Cheerfulness, concentration, fitness for practice. The old texts are sometimes spikier than the tradition that quotes them; this site shows them as they are.
