Dharma
dharma · svadharma"Follow your dharma": your duty, your path, the work that is yours to do.
The Gita's advice on vocation is uncomfortably direct:
Better is one's own Dharma, (though) imperfect, than the Dharma of another well-performed. Better is death in one's own Dharma: the Dharma of another is fraught with fear.
The original Sanskrit
śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt svanuṣṭhitāt | sva-dharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ
Better your own path done imperfectly than someone else's done well. Near the very end, the text says what doing your own work can amount to:
From whom is the evolution of all beings, by whom all this is pervaded, worshipping Him with his own duty, a man attains perfection.
The original Sanskrit
yataḥ pravṛttir bhūtānāṃ yena sarvam idaṃ tatam | svakarmaṇā tam abhyarcya siddhiṃ vindati mānavaḥ
Ordinary work, done as offering, as a road to the highest. It is one of the tradition's most quietly radical claims.
