Gheranda Samhita
The body-first tradition at its most systematic: a seven-step curriculum.
What it is
A late hatha manual, from roughly the seventeenth or eighteenth century, cast as a dialogue: the sage Gheranda teaching the seeker Chanda, step by step, from cleansing practices through posture and breath to absorption.
Why it matters
It reads like a curriculum. Of the texts here it is the most methodical about the body, and much of what a modern posture class inherits passes through manuals like this one.
Where to start
This text is browsable in the original Sanskrit only for now; an attributed public-domain English translation is being prepared. Until it lands, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika carries the body-first tradition in English.
